Ballynacargy GAA Notes

ACLF Div 3: Ballynacargy 2-9, St Malachy's 1-1

Last Saturday at a sunny Moynihan Park, Ballynacargy, the intermediate footballers had their first home game of the season and they didn't disappoint recording a fully deserved victory over St Malachy's.

Ryan Maher and Jason McKeown bagged the two first half goals as Bal' led by 2-6 to 0-1 at the interval. They imposed their game on the opposition, dominating the restarts and putting the visitors' defence on the back foot. Aside from the clinical finishes to the net, there were fine scores from Troy Maher and Jack Doran.

The second half was less impressive and Bal' will be disappointed not to have built on three early points. However, they always remained in control and but for one momentary lapse, when they allowed St Malachy's in for a 56th minute goal, it was a very solid display. Dylan Keena and Gary Fagan were excellent in defence, as was Willie Murtagh, while Senan Lynam's strength in midfield made a telling difference. Up front, Jack Doran, Troy Maher and Ryan Maher led the scoring, while the industrious Philip Price featured well. Bal' took the opportunity to introduce five substitutes also and it was a very positive day on home soil. Certainly a case of onwards and upwards with round three to come in a couple of weeks.

Team and scorers: Tommy Nally, Dylan Keena, Eoin Nally (0-1), Gary Fagan (0-1), Ben Wilson, Willie Murtagh, Conor Byrne, Jason McKeown (1-0), Senan Lynam (0-1), Danny Scally, Jack Doran (0-3, frees), Philip Price (0-1, free), Troy Maher (0-2), Ryan Maher (1-0), Eoin Maxwell. Subs used: John Keena, Darragh Keena, Rian Conroy, Barry Leavy, Niall Peyton.

This was Bal's second league game of the year after they got the season up and running at Killucan a week earlier, where they encountered a very strong, well organised opposition. Despite the defeat, a young, inexperienced side gave their all and it's all part of the learning curve for what lies ahead later this year and in the future.

The home side, established in the senior grade, proved the superior outfit, their pace and movement of a higher level throughout. A youthful Bal' side trailed by five points at half-time (2-4 to 1-2) following a goal by Jack Doran in the 14th minute, but facing the stiff breeze in the second half was an unenviable prospect, and so it proved. While Jason McKeown fisted home the second goal on 48 minutes, following Ryan Maher's pass, Killucan simply went through the gears and there was no stopping them.

Bal' battled on despite adversity and Rian Conroy's terrific point at the end was some consolation, following some fine fielding by Ryan Maher. Dylan Keena, Willie Murtagh, Enda Scally, Danny Scally and Philip Price all featured prominently, while 'keeper Tommy Nally was solid throughout.

Team and scorers were: Tommy Nally, Ben Wilson, Gary Fagan, Dylan Keena, Niall Peyton, Willie Murtagh, Eoin Nally, Jason McKeown (1-0), Conor Byrne, Danny Scally, Jack Doran (1-1, 0-1 45), John Keena, Philip Price (0-1), Ryan Maher (0-1), Eoin Maxwell. Subs used: Enda Scally, Darragh Keena, Rian Conroy (0-1), Daniel Maguire.
